Chandler recalled the experience of writing The Long Good-Bye in a letter to Jean de Leon in 1957: "I was a loving and faithful husband for almost thirty-one years, and I watched my wife die by half-inches and I wrote my best book in the agony of that knowledge, and yet I wrote it.
