Donald Culross Peattie (1898-1964) was born in Chicago and grew up in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina, which sparked his interest in the immense wonders of nature. He studied at the University of Chicago and Harvard University. After working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he decided to pursue a career as a writer. He is considered one of the most influential American nature writers of the 20th century.

An Almanac for Moderns was published in 1935. The work contains a short essay for each day of the year that contemplates a unique but factual aspect of unbridled nature, providing bits of information of natural historical lore by an author who was both a writer and a scientist. Peattie has been called "America's most lyrical naturalist. He is in love with nature, and with the great naturalists as well--with Audubon above all... It does not invalidate the beauty of [Peattie's works] that they are grounded in a thorough scientific foundation" (Kunitz & Haycraft). An Almanac for Moderns received the gold medal of the Limited Editions Club.
