Description

Coventry Patmore. Faithful for Ever. London: John W. Parker and Son, 1860.

8vo. With 4 pp. publisher's advertisements at end. Original plum cloth, gilt-lettered on spine; cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO JOHN RUSKIN on the title: "John Ruskin, Esq. / With the Writer's best Regards."

Patmore, a longtime friend and supporter of the Pre-Raphaelites, had contributed several pieces to their periodical The Germ (edited by William Rossetti), and had been the persuasive force behind Ruskin's decision to write his memorable letters to the Times (May 13 and 30, 1851) defending the Pre-Raphaelites against bitter public attacks. Patmore is best known for his Angel in the House (1854), a long poem glorifying the joys of domesticity (see previous lot). AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY.

Condition: Spine a little leaned and faded; joints rubbed; minor wear to lower joint near head; touch of wear to extremities; hinges tender.

Provenance: John Ruskin (presentation inscription); Francis A. Gaskill (bookplate); sold Sotheby's, 1 January 1963, lot 331; John Howell Books, San Francisco (Catalogue 54, item 242); J. O. Edwards (bookplate). From the William A. Strutz Library.
