Coventry Patmore. The Angel in the House. The Betrothal. London: John W. Parker and Son, 1854.

8vo. Original brown cloth, printed paper spine label; cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO BROWNINGS on the title-page: "Mrs. and Mr. Robert Browning, / with the kind regards of / Coventry K. Patmore. / Sept. 16. 1855."

The prominent Victorian poet and literary critic, Coventry Patmore is best known for this long narrative poem celebrating married love and domesticity, and the Victorian ideal of a happy marriage. The Angel in the House cemented Patmore's reputation as the quintessential Victorian idealist. After the publication of his first book of poems in 1844, he became acquainted with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and befriended the Brownings. Robert Browning's poem "A Face" was written in response to Patmore's The Angel in the House. While published in 1864, Browning's poem was written twelve years earlier for Emily Patmore, Coventry's wife and muse. And while Patmore held his friend Elizabeth Browning in high literary esteem, he did not overlook the almost overly striking similarities which Aurora Leigh showed to his own Angel in the House.

Condition: Spine leaned, with label a little darkened and quite rubbed; covers rubbed; rear joint partially split and slightly frayed; a little wear to spine ends and corners; hinges cracked. Occasional minor spotting; slight marginal toning.

Provenance: Robert and Elizabeth Browning (presentation inscription); R. W. Barrett Browning (his sale, Sotheby's, 7 May 1913, lot 971); Lewis Kennedy Morse (bookplate). From the William A. Strutz Library.
