Description
L. Frank Baum. Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz. Chicago: Reilly & Britton Co., [1908]. First edition, first state with "Co." included in the publisher's imprint at the foot of the spine and textual points as called for. Boldly signed and inscribed by the author to the ownership page, "Ozzily yours, L. Frank Baum." Octavo. 256, [2] pages. Illustrated with sixteen bright full-page color plates and profuse in-text illustrations by John R. Neill. Publisher's blue cloth, pictorial paper label to the upper board, pictorial spine stamped in silver and black; lacking the rare original dust jacket. Corners just bumped and rubbed, minor edgewear, head and foot of spine pushed and somewhat worn, somewhat rubbed and soiled. Yellow and black pictorial endpapers, edges trimmed and stained yellow; hinges starting, minor scattered soiling to endpapers. Internally generally clean and tight; contemporary ownership signature to the ownership page, ownership page also with several small puncture marks just affecting the "L" in the author's signature, minor soiling, small open tear to the bottom margin of pages 19-20, text block edges with minor soiling and wear, top edge darkened. Housed in custom blue cloth chemise and blue cloth clamshell case, backed in blue morocco and spine stamped in gilt. Very good or better.Hanff & Greene, IV.1.
