[Illuminated Manuscript]. Manuscript Leaf from a Medieval Book of Hours: Hours of the Virgin at Prime. In Latin. [France]: circa 1500. Single leaf on vellum. Measures approximately 6.75 x 4.5 inches. Faint foxing on outer margins, light soiling on upper margin. Near fine.Contains the beginning of the Hours of the Virgin at Prime. Written in brown ink in a French gothic textualis. The recto contains a large arch-topped miniature in gold and colors depicting the Nativity above three lines of text. With a three-line initial in blue with white tracery against a gold ground infilled with leaves and flowers in green and mauve, and one one-line initial in gold against a blue ground with white tracery and mauve infill with white tracery. Within a full inhabited border of acanthus leaves, clusters of grapes on a vine, and various flowers.
More Information:
The lower border contains a smaller miniature depicting the three Magi beholding the Star of Bethlehem, and the outer border a small arch-topped miniature depicting the Fall of Idols. Above this miniature is a bird, and below it a figure eating picked grapes.
The verso contains fifteen lines of text with a similar border in the outer margin. Two two-line initials in blue with white tracery against a gold ground with mauve and white floral infill; four one-line initials in alternating blue and mauve grounds with white tracery and contrasting mauve and blue infill.
