Description
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Masque of Pandora. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875.8vo. Original publisher's gilt-stamped terracotta cloth, beveled boards; cloth chemise.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY LONGFELLOW TO FRIEND AND SUPPORTER, JOHN NEAL, on the front flyleaf verso: "John Neal / with kind regards / of the author / Nov. 13.1875."
John Neal (1793 -1876) was an American writer, critic, editor, lecturer, and activist. He became a friend and early supporter of Longfellow, his fellow Portland native, and had an important influence on his career. In 1828, Neal established The Yankee magazine with himself as editor, and continued publication through the end of 1829. Neal published the first substantial praise of Longfellow's work in the 23 January 1828 issue of The Yankee: "As for Mr. Longfellow, he has a fine genius and a pure and safe taste, and all that he wants, we believe, is a little more energy, and a little more stoutness." Neal was the author of Rachel Dyer, and co-author of Paul Allen's History of the American Revolution. In his Journals Longfellow notes: "This evening I read John Neal's Autobiography,--a curious book, interesting to me from personal recollections" (17 October 1869). AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY.
This copy contains the first issue points as follows: imprint and copyright notice dated 1875, "Cadenabria" on p. [iii], "Heard in" on p. 32, and "Sea-Tides" as running headline on p. 141.
Condition: Very minor rubbing to extremities; text block over-opened at center of volume; the occasional minor spot. Overall, a very bright and fine copy.
References: BAL 12170.
Provenance: John Neal (presentation inscription); Jacob Chester Chamberlain (bookplate; his sale, Anderson Auction Company, 17 February 1909, lot 534); Stephen H. Wakeman (bookplate; his sale, American Art Association, 28 April 1924, lot 754). From the William A. Strutz Library.
