Description
T. S. Eliot, Henry Ware Eliot, Jr. and Charlotte Champe Stearns Eliot. Family Photograph Album [No place, though most likely St. Louis, MO:] Oct. 22, 1917. An album of 169 mounted and five loose original photographs (the loose photos are mounted on loose pages). On the first page is the following notation: "Photographs / Taken with small cameras belonging to / H. W. E. Jr T.S.E. and C.C.E." (these initials stand for Henry Ward Eliot, Jr., Thomas Stearns Eliot and Charlotte Champe [Stearns] Eliot; Henry is T. S. Eliot's brother, and Charlotte is his mother). Above this is the following gift inscription: "Mother from Henry / Oct. 22, 1917". This album is divided into various sections, with the following handwritten headings: "St. Louis Jan 1915 [crossed out and above is written "1895"] to Jan. 1916 [crossed out and above is written "1896"]," "Eastern Point 1895", "The St. Louis Cyclone of May 26, 1896.", "Fall of 1897", "Gloucester 1896-7", "Pictures taken by T.S.E. with his camera 1898-1903". Headings are written, most likely by Henry Ware Eliot, Jr., and are in ink or pencil. Most of the photos are captioned by hand in either ink or pencil. One photo is loose from the mount, one photos is missing from the mount, five photos are loose and held in a pocket on the rear pastedown. Light wear to album. Near fine. A vernacular album featuring the Eliot family over a period of several years. These candid photos show the young T. S. Eliot and his family at home and school, and at various seaside (or lakeside) locations (with several photos of sailboats and other vessels), and other cities, including New York, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. It is unlikely that these photos have appeared in print anywhere. From a T. S. Eliot Family Collection.Auction Info
