Description
Wallace Stevens. Autograph letter signed ("W. Stevens") to Columbia University Professor René Taupin. [Hartford, Connecticut, c. April 23, 1928].One page, 4to (10 1/2 x 8 inches). Written on the verso of a letter from Taupin to Stevens, on Columbia University Department of Romance Languages letterhead; cloth folding case.
UNCOMMON AND UNPUBLISHED AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY STEVENS REGARDING THE INFLUENCE OF FRENCH WRITERS ON HIS OWN WORK.
Stevens responds to a letter from René Taupin in which Taupin asks: "Dear Sir, As I am engaged in a study of the 'Influence of French symbolism on Modern American Literature', I am much interested in knowing whether you feel that your own work has been particularly affected by any French writer. It seems to me that there has been a quiet trend - even if unconscious - and I shall be immensely obliged for any information you could give me, either in its relation to yourself or to any other modern writers you may know of."
Stevens responds in part: "If I have been influenced by the French writer above others I am not conscious of it. And of course I am not conscious of unconscious influences... How much of reading, memory, etc. enters in is more than I can tell. The lightness, gracefulness and special sound and color of French as a language has undoubtedly had a constant influence on me - and one that is precious."
Though other letters exist between Stevens and Taupin (at least one reply from Stevens in French), the present letter is apparently unpublished.
Condition: Light creases along old folds, small stain in margin, a few spots and minor toning.
Provenance: René Taupin (recipient); acquired from James Cummins Bookseller, New York, acquisition date unknown. From the William A. Strutz Library.
