Description
[Samuel Johnson]. A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1775.8vo (236 x 141mm). With 12-line errata leaf at end. Original half calf and marbled boards, uncut; quarter morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the 12-line errata at end. Todd's edition A (the twelve lines contain eleven errata, p. 199 line 13 has "afford"), D8 and U4 cancels (U4 with p. 296 incorrectly numbered 226). This copy with most of the errors ink-corrected in a contemporary hand.
Johnson was 63 years old at the time of his and Boswell's journey in the summer and autumn of 1773. Prior to their trip he had rarely travelled outside of London, and Courtney & Smith note that these travels "were no inconsiderable feat for a man of his age and size. They were not free from danger or discomfort. But he went through the troubles which attended his wanderings without flinching." His resulting account is a detailed piece of cultural anthropology.
Condition: Binding broken with text block cracked at center; lower cover detached; boards rubbed and worn at edges. Scattered light spotting; marginal tear on S4; small hole in lower margin of leaf Bb6; a little toning to some deckle edges.
