Glenway Wescott. The Bitterns, a Book of Twelve Poems. Evanston: Monroe Wheeler, [1920].12mo, original decorated black wrappers stamped in silver, sewn as issued with black cord; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of the author's rare first book. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS INTIMATE FRIEND, PHOTOGRAPHER GEORGE PLATT LYNES, on the front free endpaper: "dear problem and faithful friend - this booklet is a 'keepsake' of my problematical years, Glenway." Additionally inscribed by Lynes between the lines of Wescott's inscription: "George Platt Lynes / New York / March 11, 1927."
George Platt Lynes is best known as a portrait, fashion, and nude photographer. He spent several years living with and traveling with Glenway Wescott and publisher Monroe Wheeler. Lynes, who lived with Wescott and Wheeler in a true ménage à trois in the 1930s and 1940s, soon became part of their shared life. When Lynes hit upon photography, Monroe and Wescott nurtured his career and used their considerable connections to get him both work and gallery shows. AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY.
Condition: Wrapper split completely along central fold; lower corner chipped on upper wrapper; some marginal nicks.
