Poems. London: Macmillan and Co., 1866.Small 8vo. Frontispiece and illustrated title page by the author's brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Publisher's green cloth decorated in gilt.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on a fly leaf: "Joanna Agnew / from Christina G. Rossetti."
Joanna Agnew Severn (1846-1924), born Joan but called Joanna by her family and close friends, was a cousin of the English writer and art critic John Ruskin. As Ruskin aged, Joanna served as both his housekeeper and nurse. John Ruskin was an early supporter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, whose founders included two of Christina Rossetti's brothers, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti. An interesting association.
Condition: Spine sunned, some staining and bumps to cloth, other edgewear. Front hinge starting. A few scattered spots and light toning to textblock.
