Small 8vo. Frontispiece and illustrated title page by the author's brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Publisher's green cloth decorated in gilt.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on a fly leaf: "Joanna Agnew / from Christina G. Rossetti."

Joanna Agnew Severn (1846-1924), born Joan but called Joanna by her family and close friends, was a cousin of the English writer and art critic John Ruskin. As Ruskin aged, Joanna served as both his housekeeper and nurse. John Ruskin was an early supporter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, whose founders included two of Christina Rossetti's brothers, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti. An interesting association.

Condition: Spine sunned, some staining and bumps to cloth, other edgewear. Front hinge starting. A few scattered spots and light toning to textblock.
