Remarkable figures of children's literature - Arthur Rackham illustrates The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Arthur Rackham, illustrator. Original drawing for the story "Doctor Know-all," first published in The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (London: Constable & Company LTD., 1909). [c. 1909].

Original ink and watercolor drawing on board. Measures approximately 10 x 7.5 inches, matted and framed to an overall size of 15 5/8 x 12 ¾ inches. Signed at lower left "A Rackham." Captioned in pencil in an unknown hand in the lower margin: "Doctor Know-all - A poor peasant was taking a load of wood to the town." Printer's notes on verso in pencil and blue crayon.

The present drawing illustrates the first line of the story "Doctor Know-all," which begins, "Once upon a time a poor Peasant, named Crabb, was taking a load of wood drawn by two oxen to the town for sale..."

Condition: Some light toning to image. Tape reinforcement along verso edges.
