Presentation copy of the privately printed true first edition of Beatrix Potter's second book

Beatrix Potter. The Tailor of Gloucester. [London: Privately Printed by Strangeways and Sons], December 1902.

16mo (in eights). Publisher's pictorial pink boards. Quarter morocco slipcase, cloth chemise.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. INSCRIBED BY BEATRIX POTTER on the front free endpaper: "With best wishes for Christmas / from Beatrix Potter / to someone who was said / to have liked Peter Rabbit."

The true first edition was privately printed in an edition of only 500 copies.

Condition: Rebacked to match original pink boards, original endpapers preserved, corners refreshed. Boards stained.

Provenance: Christine Bateman (ownership inscription above Potter's presentation inscription), a gift from the author to Annie Bateman (mother of Christine Bateman), an artist and the first woman admitted to the Darlington School of Art.
