A very early Hawthorne letter to his attorney, concerning the distribution of four early copies of the 1842 edition of Twice-Told Tales: "My book will be out tomorrow afternoon. I have directed the publisher to send you four copies--three of which I will trouble you to transmit to No. 10 Heibert Street; and please keep the remining copy for yourself. I called at the auctioneers for Spark's Biography; but they said that you did not buy the book. It was knocked down to a Mr. Adams. His Reverence, the Cardinal, is in the city-drunk, of course" [closing with signature excised]. Below which Roberts has notated in ink: "I shall not be down till next week..."
