Description
Andrew Marvell. Miscellaneous Poems. London: Printed for Robert Boulter, 1681.Folio (292 x 186 mm). Engraved frontispiece, woodcut device on title [McKerrow 195]. Contemporary calf, covers gilt-ruled enclosing small floral corner ornaments; cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of the principal collection of Marvell's verse, containing the first appearances of many of his best-known poems. Edited by his widow, who in her prefatory address to the reader asserts that "all these Poems... are Printed according to the exact Copies of my late dear Husband, under his own Hand-Writing, being found since his death among his other Papers..."
In this volume are first printed most of Marvell's best-known poetry, including "To His Coy Mistress" ("Had we but World enough, and Time..."), "A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body," "The Garden," "The Drop of Dew," "The Nymph Complaining of the Death of Her Faun," "The Picture of Little T.C. in a Prospect of Flowers," and the sequence of Mower poems.
As in most copies, leaf S1 in this copy is a cancel leaf replacing R2-T1, and X1 is a cancel leaf replacing U2-4 to suppress three long poems on Oliver Cromwell (these leaves are present only in the BL and Huntington copies).
Condition: Rebacked preserving much of the original spine; covers rubbed and worn in places; internal tear on front free endpaper. Lacking initial blank; frontispiece creased, but a fine impression; some pale dampstaining into text at head of quires D-E; single leaf U with old ink transfer from the press to upper fore-corner; occasional minor soiling or toning. Overall, a fresh crisp copy.
