Crane records that The Spiral Press printed 2,275 copies over 8 varying names (imprints) of this 1948 Christmas poem, the first appearance of "Closed for Good." "Closed for Good" would later be collected in Complete Poems of Robert Frost (1949) and included in Frost's final book, In the Clearing (1962). Here, Frost transmits one of each of the 8 variations. The names include his own; his typographer and wife (Ann & Joseph Blumenthal); his friend, neighbor, and the first to publish his poetry as chairman of Holt, Reinhart, Alfred C. Edwards; Glenn Gosling, director of the University of Michigan Press, which published some of Frost's works; his publisher, Henry Holt and Company; his friends Marguerite & Fred Melcher, who was a bookseller and publisher of The Publisher's Weekly; Margaret & Tom Nason, this title's artist and his wife; and others.
Lawrance Thompson (1906-1973) was an English professor and noted academic. He authored numerous books on American poets, including a three-part biography of Robert Frost. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Biography in 1971 for the second part of his biography of Frost.
