The interest of early modern printers and readers in the compilation of historical particulars, even on a large and expensive scale, is clear.... But, Theodor Zwinger, whose Theatrum humanae vitae was a most impressive contribution to the genre both for its size and its longevity, provides a detailed discussion of the subject, form, and goals of his work... The Theatrum in its three editions frames a lifetime of exceptionally open-minded and wide-ranging teaching, reading, and writing, especially informed by medicine, ethics, and history."
