FIRST EDITION OF FOSTER'S POPULAR ANTI-SLAVERY BALLAD, FIRST STATE, with title on page 2 in two lines, first line curved, and platemark "1892." Foster originally intended the title of this ballad to be "Poor Uncle Tom, Good Night," influenced at the time by the numerous songs inspired by the recent Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). See Howard, Stephen Foster: America's Troubadour (1934), pp. 277-286.

Condition: Some pale foxing and offsetting; remnants of guard and binding along left margin; sheet music seller's stamp "W. Swan" at foot of cover. Final leaf detached but present.
