8vo. Original green cloth, stamped in silver on upper cover and spine; dust jacket; cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION. THE DEDICATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE ILLUSTRATOR WILL CRAWFORD on the front free endpaper with an eighteen-line humorous poem entitled "'To Will Crawford'," which ends: "I warn you, never leave me - / Or I will write another book / And take revenge in black-and-blue. / I warn you, best believe me! / Mackinlay Kantor / New York, / October 9, 1938." ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY KANTOR TO EDITOR WILLIAM TARG below in green ink, on a later occasion when this copy was given as a gift to the editor on his 60th birthday: "Will Crawford's personal presentation copy of the book dedicated to him has come back to me after nearly twenty-nine years. It is presented to William Targ, 4 March, 1967, on occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Love - Mackinlay Kantor."

Will Crawford was an illustrator who created artwork for several of Kantor's books. Their collaboration included The Romance of Rosy Ridge, a story set in post-Civil War Missouri, which was later adapted into a film. They also worked together on Turkey in the Straw, a book of American ballads and primitive verse. Targ was a noted American book editor and publisher, who worked at the World Publishing Company from 1942 to 1964, and where he ultimately become editor-in-chief. He later joined G.P. Putnam's Sons where in 1968 he acquired the publishing rights to Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather, which became Putnam's most profitable novel to that time. A REMARKABLE DOUBLE ASSOCIATION COPY.

Condition: Minor rubbing and soiling to cloth. Dust jacket worn with chipping and losses, flap corners trimmed (but price intact "$2.50"), soiled.
