With an Introduction by A.B. Lawrence of New Orleans. New York: Published by William W. Allen, 1840. First edition. Signature of David G. Burnet, then vice president of Texas, to whom this volume is dedicated, at dedication page. Additional gift inscription with note of provenance in an old hand at front free endpaper: "From Mrs. / Mann to / V. E. Garland / This book was / originally owned / by David G. / Burnet." Twelvemo in sixes. xxii, [23]-275, [1, blank] pages [note: i-ii are blank]. Original brown cloth, boards decoratively stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Boards sunned at edges and spine with some wear to edges. Endpapers and text toned; rear free endpaper torn out; rear flyleaf with lower portion removed. Small notations in pen at front endpapers and faint note in pencil at rear. Lacking frontispiece. A good, sound copy, housed in a custom clamshell case. From the private collection of Stephen Lyle Boyd.An excellent association to an important figure in the history of the Republic of Texas, Dedicated to Burnet with whom the author had significant interaction during his time in Austin, interviewing him for the purpose of this book as well as baptizing his son [Jenkins, 120].
