Description

Emily Dickinson. Poems... Second Series. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1891.

8vo. With facsimile of Dickinson's "Renunciation" on two leaves before title. Publisher's gift binding in half white goatskin and floral-patterned paper over boards, spine gilt-decorated with gilt-lettered dark morocco spine labels, edges gilt; full morocco slipcase.

FIRST EDITION IN THE SCARCE PUBLISHER'S DELUXE GIFT BINDING. By far the scarcest variant binding for this title: the two other bindings were issued new at $1.25 and $1.50 respectively; this binding was originally issued at $3.50. Myerson notes "copies in Binding C have also been bound with gathering a omitted or leaf a1 cancelled. In all copies, leaf 15 4 has been cancelled."

Condition: Spine rubbed with some loss to gilt decoration in compartments; some other minor soiling and edgewear; front hinge cracked, with first quire becoming loose; photographic postcard of Dickinson's home in Amherst mounted on front pastedown; light pencil numerals written on rear leather turn-ins.

References: BAL 4656 ("reported, not seen, in publisher's half calf"); Myerson A2.1.a.

Provenance: Charlotte F. Roberts, possibly a relative of the publishing firm (signature on front flyleaf dated "Christmas 1893"). From the William A. Strutz Library.
