Description
[Mormon Church]. [Joseph Smith]. The Book of Mormon. Account Written by the Hand of Mormon, Upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Neph. Translated by Joseph Smith, Jr. Kirtland, Ohio: Printed by G. Cowdery & Co. for P. P. Pratt and J. Goodson, 1837. Second edition, with copyright notice on verso of the title-page, the testimonies of the three and eight witnesses immediately following page 619, and a note to the reader at the foot of the testimony of eight witnesses. Twelvemo (5.75 x 3.25 inches; 146 x 84 mm.). [i-ii], [v]-vi, [7]-619, [2, testimonies], [1, blank] pages (note: pages 235-237 misnumbered "335-337"). Contemporary cloth-backed calf; all text block edges trimmed. Front board detached, along with first five leaves of text block; cloth darkened and worn, with split along center of backstrip and loss to spine and joint ends; boards a bit rubbed, with several small, shallow scuffs and scratches along with some small areas of minor surface cracking; fairly mild edge wear; corners bumped, with boards showing through leather. General minor soiling to endpapers; tears and creasing to pastedowns; front free endpaper partially affixed to pastedown, chipped and creased along edges, with bold, inked previous owner signature dated "May - 1837." Text block dulled, particularly along edges, which have softened and exhibit some faint speckle-soiling; fairly mild but consistent foxing throughout; first few leaves of text block still attached to front board nicked around edges, with latter ones just starting to pull away at head of gutter; a few spots where gutters are splitting; small pencil annotation at head of 276; another faint owner signature at verso of final leaf of text. Very good. While a second edition of the Book of Mormon was contemplated as early as 1833, work on the second edition did not get underway until late 1836 and early 1837. Crawley writes that "in preparation for the new edition, the first edition was 'carefully re-examined and compared with the original manuscripts'" by Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Richard Howard has found more than two thousand changes which were written into the Printer's Manuscript of the 1830 Book of Mormon and incorporated in the second edition, and over one thousand other changes not indicated in the manuscript. It would seem, therefore, that the 1837 Book of Mormon was printed from the corrected Printer's Manuscript, and additional changes were made - by Cowdery? - as the book was set in type. Most of the changes are grammatical and stylistic. A few, however, are significant, for example, where 'God' or 'Eternal Father' on p. 25, lines 4 and 11; p. 26, line 9, and p. 32, line 11 are changed to 'Son of God' or 'Son of the Eternal Father.' Thus the 1837 Book of Mormon is an important progenitor in the genealogy of the Book of Mormon: from it was printed the first of a sequence of British and American editions culminating in the edition now in use by the LDS church." Crawley 35; Flake and Draper 596.
