London: Printed for W. Griffin, 1770.4to (274 x 211 mm). With half-title; engraved title vignette by Isaac Taylor. 19th-century polished calf, spine gilt, edges gilt, by W. Pratt; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION, THICK-PAPER COPY of Goldsmith's most celebrated poem, with catchword on p. 9 misprinted "Careless" for "Thus." A social commentary, The Deserted Village is a work which condemns rural depopulation and the pursuit of excessive wealth. The duodecimo editions dated the same year, previously believed to be "privately printed" or "trial" editions predating this quarto edition, have since been shown by Todd to be Edinburgh piracies.
Condition: Binding rebacked with original spine laid down; small burn mark to lower corner of upper board; minor wear to edges and corners; minor scuffing.
