Description
Inscribed copy of the first edition, first issue, in the earliest binding of Robert Frost's first book of poetry
Robert Frost. A Boy's Will. London: David Nutt,
1913.8vo. Publisher's bronzed brown pebbled cloth, front board stamped in gilt. Custom full morocco folding case, cloth chemise.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, BINDING A. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FROST IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION on the title page: "For M. S. Slocum / from / Robert Frost / 1913."
Though Frost had a book of poetry called Twilight privately printed and bound in 1894 in an edition of two copies (only one of which survives), the present book of poetry is widely considered his first publication and, indeed, is his first commercially produced book of poetry. The printer reports one thousand sheets were originally produced of the first edition of A Boy's Will and, of these one thousand sheets, no more than 350 copies were bound for distribution by David Nutt before the company's dissolution.
Condition: Slightest touch of edgewear; else, a beautiful copy in fine condition.
References: Crane A2.
Provenance: M.S. Slocum (presentation inscription). From the William A. Strutz Library.
