8vo. Photographic frontispiece portrait of Graves and illustrations. Publisher's salmon-pink cloth, gilt-lettered on spine, sheets partially unopened on lower edges; original pictorial dust jacket illustrated with a photograph of the author by Arthur Cracknell; cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, including passages on p. 290 and pp. 341-343 that were suppressed at Siegfried Sassoon's insistence in later issues. The unexpurgated text includes a description of Sassoon's mother's attempts to communicate with her dead son Hamo, and the text of a verse letter from Sassoon to Graves, published without his permission. With original 4 pp. order form entitled "War" laid in, advertising six Cape books, including this and another Graves title, as well as Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and E. E. Cummings' The Enormous Room.

Condition: Binding extremely fine and bright. Dust jacket flap corners with Cape's decorative clip not affecting price on upper flap ("10s. 6d. net."); light toning to spine panel and flap folds; pale soiling to jacket; just a touch of very slight wear at extreme top edge of spine panel and flap corners; small internal tear (4 mm.) near rear joint fold at lower center. Overall, a remarkably fine copy in an extremely well-preserved jacket.
