Mill's Scarce History of India

James Mill, Esq. The History of British India. London: Printed for Baldwin, Craddock, and Joy, Paternoster Row, 1817. First edition. Three quarto volumes. xxii, 648; viii, 720; viii, 777, [1] pages. With a folding engraved map in Volume I and a folding engraved map (hand-colored) in Volume II. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Marbled endpapers. Titles stamped in gilt on leather spine labels. Some later restoration to spines. Modest shelf wear to edges of the boards. Some scattered foxing. Maps are bright, intact, and without tears. Previous owner's name on front endpaper of each volume. Small hole on front endpaper of Volume II. A very attractive copy of a scarce work. Mill's work took twelve years to complete and his history is "a story of ideas and institutions, of historical stages and processes, more than of flesh-and-blood human beings and the din of battle." (ODNB).
