Forty-Eight Full-Color Portraits
of Native Americans
Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall. History of the
Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and
Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Volume II. Philadelphia:
Daniel Rice and James G. Clark, 1842. First edition of volume II
[only volume present]. One folio volume, of three. Approximately
19.75 x 14 inches. [ii], 237, [3, blank] pages. Volume II is
complete with forty-eight hand-colored plates. Errata slip.
Twentieth-century half brown levant morocco over brown cloth
boards, with portion of contemporary leather spine affixed to
spine, and with contemporary (original?) cloth portion from front
board affixed to front board, later endleaves. Front joint cracked,
binding worn, hinges reinforced, pages 5/6 and 7/8 and one plate
(Opothle Yoholo) reinforced with brown paper tape at edges, page 75
with large tape repairs, pages 12, 13, 15, and 19 with small tape
repairs or reinforcements, some plates with apparent offset from
leaves or other small plants on blank rectos, some toning, offset
to plates, some foxing in text. Good. Despite these flaws, this is
still a portion of the first edition of "The grandest color plate
book issued in the United States up the time of its publication"
