First Edition of The Life of the Very Reverend and Learned Cotton Mather

the Very Reverend and Learned Cotton Mather. Boston: Samuel
Gerrish, 1729. First edition. Octavo. [2, blank], [4], iv, 6, 10,
186 pages. Complete with half-title. Bound in contemporary full
paneled calf, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, with burgundy
gilt morocco lettering label, five raised bands. Binding worn,
especially at joints and corners, both boards re-hinged, and hinges
reinforced, front free endpaper missing lower third (at an angle),
previous ownership signature and inkstamp on front free endpaper
and first blank, rear free endpaper with some ink markings, text
toned, foxed, and somewhat soiled. Still, a good copy in a
contemporary binding.Written by his son, this is the first biography of Cotton Mather and also includes the first listing of his many publications.
