Description
[Texas Revolution: José María de Tornel y Mendivil] Miguel Barragán Broadside Establishes New Commandancias and Headquarters to Handle Texas Revolt. One page (with blank integral), 8" x 11.5", Mexico City, January 13, 1836. Being a decree of the Congreso general, approved by Miguel Barragán, President ad interim, and promulgated the same day by José María Tornel. Signed in print "Tornel," with several secretarial notations and signatures. Headed "Secretaria de la Guerra y Marina," this decree modified the law of March 21, 1826, by establishing a separate Commandancy-General in Coahuila y Tejas, and appointing a military officer to reside within the borders of Texas, specifically to keep tabs on the revolt developing in that state.Upon his election as president in 1833, Santa Anna revoked the liberal constitution of 1824, and began ruling as a virtual dictator. Responding in early January 1835, Texas and several other provinces declared themselves independent of the Mexican federal government until constitutional principals could be reestablished. Barragán then served as interim president from January 28, 1835, to February 27, 1836, while Santa Anna headed north to confront the rebels at Zacatecas, then further north into Texas to fight at the Alamo, and face his final undoing at the Battle of San Jacinto. Document is lightly age toned, with irregular dark stains along folds at right edge.
