Description

A beautifully preserved children's book, rarely found in such fine condition

Helen Bannerman. The Story of Little Black Sambo. No. 4 in 'The Dumpy Books for Children' series. London: Grant Richards, 1899.

16mo. Publisher's light green cloth stamped in dark green. Illustrated with 27 full-page wood-engraved illustrations, printed in color. Custom full morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION of this "revolutionary-style picture book" (Schiller).

Notably rare, Schiller writes, "the book is firmly rooted in the annals of children's literature and it is a proverbial rarity in first edition among other historical juveniles...should a census eventually be attempted, there would probably be fewer copies located than of the notoriously rare and suppressed 1865 Alice."

Condition: Scattered soiling to textblock.

Provenance: "Jack" (contemporary gift inscription); acquired from Heritage Book Shop, Los Angeles, in 1998. From the William A. Strutz Library.
