Description

Paul Cain (pseudonym for George C. Sims). Fast One. Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1933. First edition. Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 190 x 130 mm.). [2, blank], [x], 304, [4, blank] pages. Publisher's gray cloth, spine and front board lettered and stamped (outlining text) in dark red; top edge stained dark red, others rough-trimmed; in original dust jacket, remaindered state with publisher's rubber stamp so designating it on the rear panel. Only the slightest wear to board edges; one corner very gently bent. Endpapers and verso of half-title with some faint offsetting; minor marginal wear to pages [ix] and [x], with small portion of the fore-edge creased. A remarkable, nearly fine copy in a very good, but completely unsophisticated, dust jacket with some faint fading to red ink on the spine panel; worn edges, with a few small chips, at the spine ends and upper edge of the rear panel (where the 'A' in 'FAST ONE' is partially lacking), and a few small closed tears; long thin blemish to front panel between title and author credit with some color loss; light flaking to folds; rear panel lightly soiled. A fantastic copy of one of the more difficult to find titles in the hard boiled canon. Three auction records for jacket copies listed between 2002 and 2005 (as well as one First English edition copy), and then only a proof has surfaced since (in 2012). No jacketed copies currently listed in the online marketplaces (Summer 2017). The author's only novel following several Black Mask contributions. Paul Cain wrote several screenplays under his other pseudonym, Peter Ruric, the most famous of which is the weirdest of the Universal Horror Films, The Black Cat, directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. From the KoKo Collection.
