Description

Black Hills Gold Discovery Site Stereo View. This 7" x 4" stereo view by Continental Stereoscopic Company of New York shows "Camp Harney on French Creek." During Custer's 1874 expedition to the Black Hills, a significant amount of gold was discovered on August 1st, near French Creek. This resulted in an influx of white prospectors, leading to the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877. The view was originally taken by William H. Illingsworth. This is a copy image. The print is lightly faded, the mount toned with worn corners.
