Description

John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy: Rare 1963 White House Christmas Card Signed. 4.5" x 6.5" Hallmark bifolium card featuring the White House nativity scene, the crèche, from the East Room. Signed in black ink by the President and in blue ink by the First Lady.

This is the rarest known Christmas format ever signed by a president and first lady. According to Mary Evans Seeley's book, Season's Greetings from The White House, only 50 unsigned cards bearing this sentiment, "With best wishes for a Happy New Year," were produced by Hallmark and sent to the White House for them to sign. Before President Kennedy and Jackie left for that fateful trip to Dallas in November, only a very small number of these variant cards, with their lack of "Blessed Christmas" sentiment, were ever signed. The existence of this card was unknown, even by the Kennedy Library, until 1985.

Together with a September 22, 1987 typed letter from the President's former personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, to Robert L. White, explaining the rarity of the card.

Condition: Very fine.
