Franklin D. Roosevelt: D-Day Prayer Book. By President Franklin D. Roosevelt from the White House, June 6, 1944, Here Printed for His Friends at Christmastide 1944. Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, December 1944. Limited Edition of 100 copies of which this is unsigned, unnumbered. Small, slim quarto. Unpaginated (four pages of text). Printed in black, blue, and red. Vellum-backed marbled paper boards. Gilt-stamped dark blue leather spine label. Top edge gilt. In original slipcase.As thousands of U.S. and Allied soldiers stormed the beaches at Normandy, Roosevelt addressed the nation over the radio, with a prayer that he had written himself. He cited the need for peace and the upcoming uncertainty, and entreated for both patience and resolve in the coming times. Roosevelt was well aware of the great risk that Operation Overlord entailed, and prayed for the troops across the ocean and for their families on the home front: "They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph... And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be."
Franklin D. Roosevelt's last Christmas book, specially bound at the President's expense. These were given as gifts exclusively to the President's closest friends, family, and select Cabinet members. According to our research, this is the first unsigned, unnumbered copy to be offered at auction since 1984.
Condition: Light rubbing to the board corners and corner tips, with faint spotting to the spine vellum. Light soiling and wear to slipcase.
