Description
Herbert Hoover: Autograph Letter Signed Christmas 1951. Two pages, 7 .25" x 10.5", Christmas day 1951, on his personal letterhead stationery. Written to businessman Lewis Strauss, who served as the President's assistant during his administration. It reads in full: "My dear Lewis and Alice, The thirty four years of devoted friendship you have given me is a phenomenon in human relations. I have searched and sent my agent over the town looking for some sort of gimmick that might mark the occasion but you already have a stock of such furniture. I contemplated writing (I mean dedicating) a typewritten document on the subject, but you already have files of them. All which seemed a futile method of expressing the deeper sentiments which this requires. I therefore decided to send the warmer expression of a handwritten letter of which Lewis knows I have written very few in all these years because they impose much labor in translation. But Lewis knows how to read my scribbles. So this is just to say that I deeply appreciate all these years of devotion and that I hold myself obligated for this such a blessing. And also this is to wish you a happier year and more contentment than recent times have provided. Affectionately, Herbert Hoover."Auction Info
