Description

Annie Oakley: A Cabinet Photo of Britain's Queen-to-be Alexandra Presented to Annie during Buffalo Bill's 1887 Tour, and Inscribed in Oakley's Hand on Verso. When Annie Oakley was presented to Britain's Royal Family after a command performance of the Wild West, she famously snubbed the outstretched hand of Edward, Prince of Wales, to take the hand of his wife, Princess (later Queen) Alexandra. Alexandra had this picture and one of Edward framed together as a gift for Annie. (A similar framed pair was given to W. F. Cody and hangs in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming.) Did Annie so disapprove of Edward and his notorious philandering that she separated the pictures? It is clear that she unframed them. On the back of this one she has written: "Queen Alexander sent those 2 photos in frame painted special by herself for me. London. Aug 13th 1887". Excellent condition. One minor small corner clip. 4.25" x 6". This lot will be accompanied by a family letter of provenance.
