Description
Jefferson Davis: Pair of Anti-Confederacy Cartoons. Two cartoons satirizing the Confederacy. A 10" x 14" colorized litho titled "Jeff. Sees The Elephant." An early instance of the use of an elephant and a donkey to symbolize competing political interests in the United States. The Union is symbolized by the power of the elephant, who wears a blue coat and shoes and stockings decorated in the manner of the American flag. The donkey, dressed as a dandy symbolizes Jefferson Davis, raises a monocle to peer at the elephant. A gallows in the background between the elephant and the donkey signals a bleak future for the Confederacy. A 10" x 15.75" cartoon titled "Jeffy's Dream" shows a napping Jeff Davis peacefully dreaming on a bundle marked "South Carolina Bonds" and "Letters of Marque", thoughts of no other point on the compass but his beloved South, while bales of cotton gathered by slaves climbing a ladder to the clouds load a ship with the 'treasure of the south'. Several other ships in the background apparently signed with confederate letters of marque wait to be loaded. Two amazing cartoon illustrations that we do not recall having offered before!Condition: "Jeff. Sees The Elephant" is lightly and evenly toned, small hole at right edge with great color, a nice example! "Jeffy's Dream" is linen backed, also in very fine condition.
