Description

Jefferson Davis: A Pair of Anti-Confederacy Cartoons. Two grim cartoons illustrate the dismal prospects facing the Southern Confederacy in 1861. An uncredited cartoon 11.25" x 18" is titled, "You'd Better Give It Up Jeff They Won't Bite At That Bait". The scene depicts a disheartened Jeff Davis using a cotton bale and promises of loans and southern conscript to lure the support of foreign interests with no takers. Uncle Sam gently tapping Davis on the shoulder urging him to give up his fishing expedition. This cartoon was likely done prior to June 1861 as it appears the fish labeled Tennessee had not yet joined the others on Davis' stringer.
A second cartoon originating from Ohio in 1861 measuring 14" x 20.5" is simply titled, "That Feed Won't Do." Jefferson Davis depicted as a wolf, attempts to feed a starving Southern Confederacy on confederate war bonds. On the other side of the fence a U.S. bulldog tugs on the ear of Missouri, another U.S. bulldog has Maryland in submission, while Kentucky stands solemnly looking on.

Condition: The smaller of the two cartoons appears in excellent condition. The larger one has light toning. Both cartoons are linen backed.
