Description

The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia, Pa.): Early Printing of the Northwest Ordinance. July 21, 1787, 4 pgs., 11 1/4" x 16 1/4". Newspaper contains a prominent page 2 headline: "An Ordinance for the Government of the Territory of the United Sates, north-west of the River Ohio" with a printing of the Northwest Ordinance. The Northwest Ordinance was officially adopted by the Confederation Congress on July 13, 1787. It established a government for the Northwest Territory, outlined the process for admitting new states, and guaranteed certain rights to settlers, including the prohibition of slavery. Page 2 is printed slightly out of alignment with loss of a few letters of the Ordinance.
