The Independent Gazetteer or the Chronicle of Freedom (Philadelphia, PA) August 24, 1782: Recruitment of American Sailors. American Revolutionary War newspaper contains a prominent 5" x 3" front page illustrated ad for the recruiting of American sailors for service on the US navy warship "South Carolina". This is a very large detailed front page illustration of a Revolutionary War warship and the accompanying offer to American sailors to sign up to serve on it. This is one of the earliest display newspapers with a front page detailed engraving of an American warship during the Revolutionary War. This issue also contains two back page ads for Jewish-owned financial brokerage firms in Revolutionary War era Philadelphia, PA - Isaac Franks as well as Nones & Cohen.
