Description

Brass and Glass Campaign Marcher Lantern. This brass and glass campaign marcher parade lantern is attributed to the New England Glass Company and measures 16.5" tall and approximately 9.5" wide, including the handle. It features a rotund ruby-colored glass globe, held in place by Plaster of Paris caulking and six exterior ribs. It is identical in style and format to the red lanterns carried by captains in the Abraham Lincoln marching club, the Wide Awakes, except employing six exterior ribs, rather than four. The knob visible within the globe has patent information reading, "Reiss," with the patent dates of April 25, 1861 and March 14, 1865. Possibly first used in the 1860 campaign and later upgraded with a more modern kerosene burner. Acquired from a Pennsylvania estate sale of an old-time glass and lighting collection. The thought of a swaying red globe among a sea of campaign marchers elicits a haunting and dramatic image. Imagine what its presence can do for your display.

Condition: Expected wear is present, with light oxidation to the brass and minor scratching to the globe. One of the wire bands has separated from the horizontal intersecting band. In overall excellent condition.
