Description

John F. Kennedy: Typed Letter with Holographic Edits in His Hand. One page on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 8.75", Washington; July 19, 1962. Addressed to Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, and Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, the memorandum reads, in part (with holographic changes in bold), "I would like to get a report on how long this new information had been available to the Air Force and whether there was a delay in getting it and its implications on our test ban position to the Disarmament Agency and to the NSC. It is my understanding that Dr. Wiesner is now coordinating an analysis of what effect this information will have on our test ban position. I think we should get our ducks in a row in this matter as quickly as possible so that we do not undo all of our good work in this area in the spring." Accompanied by a typed revised version of the letter.

Throughout 1962 and 1963, Kennedy fought to establish talks with the Soviet Union over bans on nuclear weapons testing. Although neither side could agree to a certain number of on-site inspections, they did manage to agree on the Limited Test Ban Treaty. This agreement prohibited nuclear test explosions underwater, in the atmosphere, or in outer space.

Condition: Lightly toned with two staple holes to the upper left corner.
