Description
Precursor to the F.B.I.
Law Enforcement: Early Department of Justice Badge. 1 1/2" x
2 3/8" badge for the "Bureau of Investigation US Department of
Justice". It appears to be gold-plated brass and is stamped on the
back "Whitehead & Hoag Newark, N.J. Gold Filled" and "553". An
eagle appears at top and a shield at the bottom. The background is
stippled. Superb detail throughout. It has a C-type pin attachment
on the verso. This type of badge saw use between 1908 and 1927. The
Bureau of Investigation later became the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (F.B.I.) beginning in 1935. This is only the second
example we have seen or handled. Condition is outstanding.
