Description
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Eighteen Historically Important Studio Photos From His Only Visit To Fort Worth, Texas. On October 22, 1959, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., only 30 years old at the time, made his only visit to Fort Worth, Texas as he was touring the country to promote his message of equality. His main objective was to deliver a speech titled, "A Great Time to Be Alive." at the Majestic Theater downtown despite the anger and numerous threats from the White community. Fort Worth was still very segregated in 1959 and King was not allowed to stay in any of the downtown hotels so instead he stayed at a friends home in the Black community. When he arrived in Fort Worth he was immediately taken to The Baker Funeral Home, deemed a safe place in the Black community to plan the itinerary for the pastor's visit. In those days White-media did not cover Black community events so a Black photographer named Calvin Littlejohn who had covered Black events for more than 50 years in Fort Worth was recruited to cover King's visit in photos. This exceedingly rare archive contains eighteen different 8" x 10" prints of the only known photographs to have been taken during that trip by Littlejohn. Ten of the eighteen photos include Dr. King. All are stamped with Littlejohn's studio imprint on the front or reverse. This archive is not only one of the rarest photographic records of Martin Luther Kings many travels and speeches, but also captures the courageous spirit and determination of one of Americas greatest historic figures of the 20th century.Condition: Exhibiting light toning from age and a few with minor handling wear, each of the photos are overall in very good to excellent condition.
