Description

Abraham Lincoln: Dried Flowers From His Coffin. 10" x 12" display consisting of a dried flower (possibly a rose) and leafy stalk, affixed to a board with caption card below reading: "For Mrs. Secy. Usher./ Taken from the coffin of our/ beloved President. April 21st 1865/ B. B. French". French was the Commissioner of Public Buildings and the Patent Office in Washington, D.C. We assume these flowers were removed at the time of Lincoln's Washington funeral on April 19, 1865. They are housed under glass in a wooden frame. The glass rests on top of the frame and is secured in place with black cloth tape. Descended in the family of Lincoln Cabinet member, Secretary of the Interior John Palmer Usher.
