Description
Richard Nixon: White House Presidential Flag with Original Pole and Eagle Finial. These stunning, meticulously embroidered flags are among the most highly prized of presidential objects among collectors. They are found in three sizes: the small "limousine flags," medium-sized "boat" or "traveling" flags measuring approximately 48" x 36", and the large size offered here, reserved for use within the White House itself. It is difficult for anyone who has never examined one of these spectacular flags in person to fully appreciate their rich beauty. Such was the labor invested in making this flag that the cost to the government was in the area of $10,000 - 12,000 in 1970 dollars!Three versions of these flags were used during the Nixon years, and they can be identified by the nature of the fringe. During the first part of Nixon's presidency, the bullion fringe was entirely metallic. The next version had fringe which was formed of thread covered with a metallic surface. The third variety, offered here, has a faux metallic fringe, and dates from the latter part of his term in office. The quality of the hand embroidery remains consistent on all three varieties.
Up to four matching sets of presidential and United States flags were delivered to the White House each year. One pair went to the Oval Office, while the others adorned such important locations as the East Room and the Cabinet Room. As a general rule, these flags have been closely held. It measures approximately 69" x 56" with fringe. Includes hide loops within the sleeve (one example split). The all-important quality control tag, though somewhat worn, reads: "Approved by...75. Flag, Dist., President, RYN. 4'4" x 5'6" w/fringe. Phila. Quartermaster." It comes with the original wooden two-part pole measuring approximately 116", circular base and eagle finial. There is some loss and fraying to the rays of the sun emanating from the eagle, on both sides. It shows signs of definite use, but is in good condition overall and ready for display.
While presidential limousine flags appear from time to time on the market (and inspire spirited bidding when they do), the opportunity to acquire one of these full-sized versions is a rare one indeed!
