Description

Daily Constitutionalist (Augusta, GA.): Surrender of General Lee to General Grant, April 29, 1865. 13.25" x 20.5, 4pp. This is a very rare original CONFEDERATE Civil War newspaper printed very late in the Civil War and at a time when most Confederate leaning newspapers had been taken over by Union occupation forces or were forced to close or flee from advancing Union military forces. This Confederate newspaper contains inside page headlines and long detailed coverage of the surrender of General Robert E Lee to Gen U S Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This marks the END OF THE CIVIL WAR as reported in a rare Confederate Civil War newspaper. It is very difficult to locate an actual Confederate Civil War newspaper reporting the SURRENDER of LEE TO GRANT and thus the END OF THE CIVIL WAR at this late stage of that war.

Condition: Disbound, toning. A rare Confederate issue.
