Description
Rare White Star Line Poster with Signature Star Motif
White Star Line Lithograph circa 1884.
A visually striking piece, from the bold red flags to the teal
waters below. "White Star Line" is advertised at the top,
festooned with countries' flags illustrating the company's far
reach. Represented are America, Norway, Denmark, and more. The
White Star Line's signature burgee appears throughout the poster
and provides attractive pops of red on the two vessels and among
the flags. In addition to their emblem, a star motif can be seen
throughout, from a large white star at the center top to small
white stars decorating the right and left edges to the stars along
the bunting beneath the flags. Ornate gold-colored ornamentation
complements the reds, whites, and blues quite nicely. The sight
size is 25.25 x 33 inches, and the frame measures 32.125 x 40
inches. It is, to the best of our knowledge, the only example
known.Condition: Extensive restorative work is present throughout, including inpainting and repairs to multiple tears and areas of loss. Some brown staining is faintly visible, possibly from a toned sealant or adhesive. Graphically gorgeous, with a colorful presence. This piece is perhaps linen-backed but has not been inspected outside the frame.
