Description

[South Carolina]: Two Publications and a Badge that Highlight South Carolina's Acceptance of Dueling and Secession.
1) The first of the two publications is John Lyde Wilson, The Code of Honor; Or Rules for the Government of Principals and Seconds in Duelling (Charleston, South Carolina: Printed by James Phinney, 1858), which is a 58-page booklet on dueling. Bound in salmon-pink paper wrappers, the book includes chapters on "The person insulted, before challenge sent"; "Duty of challenge and his second before fighting"; "Arms and manner of loading and presenting them"; and "The degrees of insult, and how compromised." This is a very rare publication on an activity that remained legal in Charleston, South Carolina, until 1880. The paper wrapper cover has retained its color. The paper is brittle with various tears, but complete. 2) The second booklet, entitled Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union and the Ordinance of Secession (Charleston: Evans & Cogswell, 1860), is bound in yellow paper wrappers and consists of 13 pages. Printed "by order of the" Secession convention, the last three pages of the pamphlet include the ordinance to dissolve the Union between the state of South Carolina and other states and a list of the signors of the ordinance. There is some paper loss and tears, but overall a great piece for display. 3) The third item is a South Carolina Secession Badge comprised of blue silk with black handstitched backing with pre-Civil War period South Carolina button. Condition is very fine. Attached to paper mount (which can easily be removed).

Three superlative rare items relating to South Carolina's history.
